There are 2 major components: Design and composition. Mise-en-scene = planning 1. DESIGN -Def: the process by which the look of settings, props, lighting and actors is determined. -PRODUCTION DESIGNER Works closely with the director. He/she is responsible for the overall design concept, the look of the movie. He/she supervises other departments (make-up, costume…). Called “art director” in classical Hollywood. -ELEMENTS OF DESIGN A- SETING -Def: environment (realistic or imagined) in which the narrative takes place. -Objectives: physical significance. Mood. Narrative information (upstairs/ downstairs theme in English films to reflect social classes). Emotional response. Character´s state of mind. -2 types of setting: On location (+ expensive). And Studio shooting (large, three- dimension spaces): it needs to consider décor and props. Must be constructed to look authentic and photograph well. Today computer-generated imaginary (CGI). Soundstage: minimum parts of the rooms needed to accommodate actors and camera movement. B-LIGHTING -Def: the use of light in order to guide the eyes of the spectator through the moving images and to help them to tell the movie´s story. -Objectives: emotional response. Narrative information. Internal states of characters. Generic expectations (from genre). -2 types: soft diffused illumination, and hard: clearly defined shadows, sharp edges. -Direction: frontal lighting. Side lighting. Backlighting. Top lighting. Under lighting. -3 point lighting: 1-Key light: primary source. Dominant illumination. Casting strongest shadows. 2- Fill light: less intense, softens or eliminates shadows cast by key light. 3-Back light: highlight edges. 2 types depending on the use of key lighting: high-key lighting and low-key lighting. -Chiaroscuro: the use of deep gradations and subtle variations of lights and darks within an image. C-PROPS (PROPERTIES) -Def: meaningful objects that are relevant for the story of the film. -Motif: a prop that appears many times in a film and which helps to understand the film.
